Tim, Remington's website shows exactly 1/2 lb. difference between the two - that's actually quite a bit, in my opinion, just for the occasional 3-1/2" capability. Used 870's are definitely the way to go. There's very little that can be "wrong" with a pump shotgun and only a slim chance that you'd get a dud.

The differences in a nut shell, the 88 uses a different trigger group with a crossbolt safety while the 500 has a tang safety. The 88 receiver is not drilled for scope rail. I do own and shoot a Mossberg M590A1, Remington 870 HD, and a Winchester 1300 Defender - all are fine SGs and work well. I prefer the higher shell capacity on the 590 as well as other aspects such as the ambi thumb ...

The Remarms 870s are better than the freedom group 870’s. Little better quality control, fit and finish. It’s no wingmaster, but they’re better than the Express from a few years ago. Something breaks you have to buy from the dealership. I rarely see anything for benelli cheap. The 590 you could make it do anything you want with the change of a barrel, and twist of a choke.I have both a Nova and a 500. The 500 is a very stout gun, the stock plastic grips do have a little wobble but the wood upgrade is solid. I do love my Nova though, the only down sides to me are the safely and action release are awkward compared to the 500 and the foregrip on the Nova feels super light weight and cheap.The quality and specs of these 2 guns is beyond the Mossberg 500 and a used Remington 870. The barrel on the Mossberg is parkerized while the receiver on the Supernova is encased inside polymer to guard against rust. Both never jam. I give the edge to the Benelli though, the capacity issue is fixed with an extension.

The Benelli is a GREAT gun, and cost me about what I paid for both the Mossy's combined.
